In a commendable initiative, the emergency department of Howard Young Medical Center (HYMC) has donated a crucial set of 12 tourniquets and dressings to the Vilas County Sheriff’s Department SWAT (special weapons and tactics) team. The presentation took place on Tuesday, Dec. 27, marking a significant step in enhancing the SWAT team's capabilities for on-the-field lifesaving interventions.
Tourniquets play a pivotal role in controlling life-threatening external bleeding from extremity wounds, particularly in the critical first moments following traumatic injuries. Lori Goff, RN, from the HYMC Emergency Department highlighted the effectiveness of tourniquets in the prehospital setting, emphasizing that approximately 40% of trauma-related deaths globally result from uncontrolled bleeding. The donation aims to equip the SWAT team with essential tools to address such emergencies before the arrival of Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
Lieutenant Mike Aderman of the Vilas County Sheriff’s Department expressed gratitude for the donation, recognizing its potential to save lives. He emphasized the importance of effective tourniquet application in increasing the chances of survival before reaching a hospital. The collaboration between the HYMC emergency department and a SWAT team member's spouse facilitated the procurement of this life-saving equipment.
Lori Goff underscored the broader impact of such contributions, stating, “This is an example of how our efforts to provide quality health care don’t stop at the door of our emergency department.” She emphasized the significance of investing in community EMS and law enforcement, ensuring they have the necessary tools to handle diverse scenarios successfully. The donation reflects HYMC's commitment to supporting those on the front lines, acknowledging and appreciating the continuous efforts of the Vilas County SWAT team.
The Vilas County SWAT team, established to offer specialized support in critical field operations requiring intense negotiations and tactical deployment beyond the scope of regular officers, stands to benefit significantly from this generous donation. This collaborative effort between HYMC and the SWAT team exemplifies a community-focused approach to healthcare, emphasizing preparedness and support for those dedicated to ensuring public safety.
